Five Ways to Celebrate World Honey Bee Day

World Honey Bee Day started in 2009 to raise awareness about the benefits of bees to society and agriculture. It’s always the third Saturday in August, in 2023 it’s August 19th.

What can you do to celebrate this holiday?

Well. I’m glad you asked, because I have a few suggestions!

If you have a little space in your yard you can plan a bee garden. Depending on where you are it may be a bit too hot to get out and start digging and planting, but you can definitely put together a plan for a bee garden that you can get to work on when it starts cooling down!  Don’t have a yard? Who says you need one? How about grouping a few potted flowers that bees will love?

No holiday is too little to throw a party for! You can make a yellow and black striped cake, & serve some Bee’s Knees, here’s a non-alcohol version!

Create some bee crafts. 

If you search the internet you’ll find lots of fun ideas for adults or children.  Carolina Honey Bees has some really cool ideas for bee crafts for all ages. Not gonna lie, I think I’m going to try some of these.

Visit a botanical garden

If you have a botanical garden near you, why not celebrate World Honey Bee Day by going to visit and looking for some bees? A visit to a garden can be a fun family day where the kids can get out some energy, or a great place for a date. Some botanical gardens will even allow you to bring in food for a picnic.

Take a hike somewhere you are likely to find bees. It’s hot out there in August, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen! You can bring a camera to catch a picture or two of bees, make a game of it seeing who can find a bee on different colored flowers, or simply hike and enjoy the views. Make sure that while you are enjoying watching the bees you’re giving them enough space to avoid bugging them.
